House Play Competition
February 2018 - Trafalgar School for Girls

Each year every House would perform a twenty-minute satire for the school following a theme, which for this year was "Over the Rainbow." As the House Head for Cumming House, it was my job to write, direct, stage manage, and design/oversee all the sets, costumes, props, and House Board for the show.

My goal with the show was to be as inclusive as possible in order to build our community and spirit. Therefore, every house member was given a role.

Following the theme of "Over the Rainbow," I wrote a play set in Candyland, the board game. Two Trafalgar students decide to play Candyland but, without the right pieces, they use Monopoly tokens. When one student goes through "Rainbow Trail," she and the other student are transported into the game. Soon they discover that the game is being taken over by Monopoly pieces so they must defeat the invaders and find their way home.

For the design of this show I wanted to create juxtaposition between the Candyland world and the Monopoly world. Do achieve this, the Candyland sets and characters were very colourful and child-like. The Monopoly people, in contrast, were dressed in grey and their costumes were drawn pieces, giving them a distant and unfriendly feel.
